No triple-dog-dare necessary! A Christmas Story is a must-add to your holiday movie watchlist.
The beloved comedy — released in theaters on Nov. 18, 1983, and directed by Bob Clark — is based on Jean Shepherd's collection of short stories, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Set in 1940s Cleveland, the film tells the tale of a 9-year-old boy named Ralphie Parker (played by Peter Billingsley) whose sole Christmas wish is for a Red Ryder Range 200 shot BB gun.
Despite the film not being a huge hit at the box office upon its release, it was received favorably and has become a seasonal staple over the years. In 2012, the Library of Congress even recognized its cultural significance by selecting it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
"There's not only a fan base for [A Christmas Story], but it's borderline sacred for a lot of people," Billingsley told PEOPLE in November 2022 ahead of its sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, which he co-produced for HBO Max. Along with Billingsley, most of the actors made their return in the follow-up, reprising their original roles.
Put on your pink bunny pajamas and read ahead to see what the cast members of A Christmas Story have been up to since captivating families and spreading a little holiday cheer on-screen.

By the time he made audiences laugh in A Christmas Story, Billingsley had a fair amount of acting experience, including in the 1981 comedies Honky Tonk Freeway with Beau Bridges and Paternity with Burt Reynolds.
Following his star-turning role in the 1983 holiday classic, Billingsley led the casts of 1985's The Dirt Bike Kid and 1989's Beverly Hills Brats, along with guest appearances on shows like Who's the Boss?, Punky Brewster and The Wonder Years. He earned a Daytime Emmy nod for a single-episode stint on the teen anthology series CBS Schoolbreak Special in 1995.
With a few other cameo exceptions (yep, that's him in 2003's Elf), Billingsley stepped behind the camera in his adulthood, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for his production work on Dinner for Five in 2005.
He also served as a producer on 2008's Iron Man and directed 2009's Couples Retreat, starring and co-written by two of his best friends and frequent collaborators, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn.
While Billingsley didn't return for the first two projects related to A Christmas Story — 1994's It Runs in the Family (later renamed My Summer Story) and 2012's A Christmas Story 2 — he served as a producer of the three-time Tony-nominated Broadway production of A Christmas Story: The Musical in 2012.
The former child actor told PEOPLE in October 2022 that he had "been mostly driven by making movies."
As for reprising Ralphie in A Christmas Story Christmas, Billingsley revealed how excited he was to combine the filmmaking skills acquired over the years.
"It was a nice opportunity to channel my writing, producing and acting all back into one," Billingsley told PEOPLE the following month.
Billingsley and his wife, Elizabeth "Buffy" Bains, have been married since 2015 and share two children.

Before starring as the matriarch of the Parker family, Melinda Dillon was an established actress onstage and on the big screen. She was nominated for two Academy Awards for her supporting performances in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Sydney Pollack's Absence of Malice (1981).
Dillon also received a Golden Globe nod in 1976 for her role in the Woody Guthrie biopic Bound for Glory and a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in the 1963 original production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
After warning Ralphie that he'd "shoot his eye out" with his BB gun, Dillon went on to costar with John Lithgow in the 1987 family comedy Harry and the Hendersons. She also appeared in 1995's How to Make an American Quilt and Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 drama Magnolia, which earned her and her castmates a SAG Award nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.
Dillon retired from acting in 2007, and her role as Mrs. Parker was played by Julie Hagerty in A Christmas Story Christmas.
Dillon died at age 83 in January 2023. Billingsley honored her memory, writing on Instagram at the time that he felt "so fortunate to have had the opportunity to call her my on-screen mother."

Darren McGavin's portrayal of Ralphie's grouchy yet loving father, known simply in the film as "the Old Man," has touched generations of fans for decades.
The actor was already a showbiz veteran when he brought Old Man Parker to life on-screen in 1983. He performed in the original Broadway productions of My Three Angels and Rainmaker. McGavin also starred opposite Katharine Hepburn in the 1955 feature film Summertime and The Man with the Golden Arm alongside Frank Sinatra that same year. He then gained notoriety as the lead in the 1972 TV film The Night Stalker, its 1973 TV movie sequel The Night Strangler and on the TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
After taking on Mr. Parker, he continued booking parent roles, including playing the titular lead's father on Murphy Brown — which earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series in 1990 — and Adam Sandler's dad in 1995's Billy Madison.
According to The New York Times, McGavin died in February 2006 at the age of 83.
A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel begins with the unexpected death of the Old Man, and, according to McGavin's former on-screen son, the sequel "is, in many ways, a love letter to the Old Man character and to Darren himself."
"Darren was the best," Billingsley told PEOPLE in October 2022. "He was such a gifted actor and a great person and such a mentor to me in the shooting of the first film, and was kind of like having [another] dad."

Jean Shepherd as Adult Ralphie

The voice presenting each A Christmas Story vignette is more than just a narrator — it's Shepherd, a broadcast personality, humorist and the closest thing there is to a real-life Ralphie Parker. The hit holiday film's source material is from Shepherd's 1966 semi-autobiographical collection of short stories, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.
He continued bringing tales to life that inspired A Christmas Story with the 1994 sequel My Summer Story until his death in October 1999.
Per The New York Times, Shepherd was referred to as the "king of talk radio before it was known as talk radio," whose "style was of a piece with his sure pacing and flat Midwestern accent."
Beyond the impact of A Christmas Story, Shepherd left a broad legacy in the comedy world. Jerry Seinfeld has shared how the late author influenced his own humor and even paid tribute to him in 2005, naming his youngest child after the late storyteller.

A Christmas Story's memorable antagonist, Scut Farkus, was played by Zack Ward in his film debut.
Ward's career continued in the '90s, thanks to supporting roles in 1996's Ed and 1997's Wild America. After landing the role as Dave Scouvel — the titular character's half-brother — on Titus from 2000 to 2002, he experienced a career resurgence, appearing in Almost Famous (2000), Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Postal (2007) and Transformers (2007).
He also nabbed roles in 2014's Dark House and 2019's Beyond the Law, as well as on the small screen on American Horror Story: Cult and Z Nation.
In honor of A Christmas Story's 35th anniversary, Ward gave PEOPLE the inside scoop on how he landed the role of Scut after several auditions. (Ward originally got the role of Grover Dill, which later went to his former costar, Yano Anaya.)
"I only had, like, two lines, and I showed up on set right beside Yano Anaya and met [director] Bob Clark for the first time," Ward told PEOPLE in 2018. "He saw that I was a foot taller than Yano and said, 'You get his lines, he gets yours.' So Scut Farkus became the bully, and I became the beloved jackass of Christmas."
Following his reprisal in A Christmas Story Christmas, Ward booked roles in the 2024 films Rockbottom and Darkness of Man. In 2025, he appeared on two episodes of the HBO Max series Bookie.
Ward has been married to Jennifer McMahan since 2018.

Scott Schwartz was just a year out of his first big comedy role in 1982's The Toy, starring Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason, before he became Flick, one of Ralphie's best — and most daring — friends in A Christmas Story.
Just two years after Schwartz memorably froze his tongue to a pole in the name of film magic, he went on to lead the cast of 1984's Kidco and costar with Liza Minnelli, Corey Haim and Jeffrey DeMunn in the 1985 made-for-TV film A Time to Live.
Schwartz has continued to appear on-screen in movies like Normal Terror (2021), Space Sharks (2024), The Friendly (2024), Scissors (2025) and Gemini (2025). He also reprised his role as Flick in 2022's A Christmas Story Christmas.

R.D. Robb was new to show business in 1983 when he played Schwartz, a friend of the kid protagonist. Following A Christmas Story, Robb nabbed a few minor TV and movie parts — playing Roy in 1996's Matilda and appearing on season 2 of ER for a single-episode stint.
Robb ventured behind the camera, directing Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire in a 2001 indie drama called Don's Plum (which the two stars prevented from being shown in the United States or Canada, according to Vanity Fair).
Robb has appeared on The Goldbergs and served as an executive producer of 26 episodes of the series Siren. To A Christmas Story fans' delight, the actor returned as Schwartz in the 2022 holiday sequel.

One year after playing Scut's bullying sidekick, Anaya was featured in Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" music video as a young Michael Anthony. He appeared in a couple of films in the late '80s — including Better Off Dead (1985) and The Blue Iguana (1988) — before stepping away from the industry.
He returned to acting in the 2021 indie flick Sunday Mornings. At the time of the release of A Christmas Story Christmas, Anaya expressed interest in buying the iconic house from the original movie. However, the owner had a public dispute with him and later sold it to another buyer.

Moore made her acting debut in 1961, working as an actress and voiceover artist. Before her retirement, she let her Christmas spirit shine with roles in 2011's Mistletoe Over Manhattan and 2017's Magical Christmas Ornaments.
When starring in A Christmas Story Live! in 2017, Jane Krakowski opened up about following in Moore's footsteps as Miss Shields, telling PEOPLE at the time, "I love the actress who played her in the original movie."
