Team responds to injured 85-year-old hiker near Breitenbush Hot Springs

An injured 85-year-old hiker was rescued June 18 from a trail near Breitenbush Hot Springs.

The hiker was about one mile up a trail near the hot springs when he fell and sustained serious injuries, according to Marion County Sheriff's Office.

At about 7 p.m., district deputies responded to the report and called in search and rescue volunteers for aid because of the challenging terrain.

SAR used a wheeled litter and technical rope system to move the hiker back to the trailhead, where he was transferred to Lyons Ambulance to receive medical care.

In a news release, the Marion County Sheriff's Office reminded hikers to tell someone their location and expected return time, carry plenty of water, wear appropriate shoes, know their physical limits and bring a charged cellphone or emergency communication device.

"Even experienced hikers can encounter unexpected hazards, so preparation is key to staying safe outdoors," the sheriff's office said.
