Steve Carell in 'Rooster' Season 1 - HBO
Bill Lawrence is giving fans of his comedy HBO comedy Roostersomething to cheer about as the co-creator gives a Season 2 filming update from behind the scenes of the series he helms with fellow co-creator Matt Tarses. While Season 2 concluded earlier this year, Lawrence’s latest tease is sure to excite as production picks back up.
This means fans will revisit the Steve Carell-led comedy sooner rather than later as it continues the story about a writer who begins working at Ludlow College as a way to support his daughter’s career, following an unexpected hurdle in her marriage. As Season 1 continues to unfold, we’re breaking down everything we know about Rooster‘s second season already, including what Lawrence and Tarses have shared with us regarding their plan for the series as well as who is likely to return, when Season 2 could air, and much more.
Scroll down for a closer look, and stay tuned for additional news on Rooster‘s second season in the months ahead.
Has Rooster been renewed for Season 2?
Rooster was officially renewed at HBO partway through airing its first season. HBO renewed the comedy after it averaged 5.8 million viewers across the first four episodes in the United States, making it the most-watched freshman comedy on the cabler in over a decade. New episodes from the 10-episode season are still unfolding, but stay tuned for any updates around Season 2 of Rooster in the weeks and months to come.
When will Rooster Season 2 premiere?
Rooster Season 2 doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but Lawrence teased that the start of Season 2 filming began in August, hinting that fans are closer than ever to seeing the characters at the heart of this series back on their screens. While it’s too early to know when the show will be back, we wouldn’t say it’s a stretch to assume a 2027 premiere date is possible.

How many seasons will Rooster have?
If it’s up to Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, Rooster would have a three-season run at HBO. “I think in our dream scenario, three probably would be enough to tell this story,” Tarses tells TV Insider. “Am I wrong about that?” he asks, turning to Lawrence.
“No,” Lawrence concurs, adding, “One of the cool things about streaming nowadays, and we never got to do [is] you pitch a beginning, middle, and end, and we know the beginning, middle, and end of this particular story, but it’s so much fun, I’d do it forever, and ever, you know?”
So, if it’s up to the showrunners, this series would continue on into a third and final season, but only time will tell if that vision comes together. They’re partway there, though!

Television and HBO for being such great partners and to Casey, Amy and Channing for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast. It’s been a career highlight for both of us, but more for Matt than me,” Lawrence shared in a statement tied to the renewal announcement.
