Matthew Lillard has one regret from his time on set of 1996's Scream
The actor reveals to PEOPLE that he doesn't own a Ghostface mask — despite being one of the franchise's OG killers
"I wish I had one of the original masks" he shares with PEOPLE
Matthew Lillard has one regret from filming Scream.
The actor, 56, tells PEOPLE that there’s one thing he wanted to steal from the set, it was a Ghostface mask. When asked by PEOPLE if he owned one, the actor, who is returning to the slasher franchise for Scream 7, says, “I don't. I wish I had one of the original masks. If I could go back in time, I'd steal the sh-t out of that thing.”
In fact, Lillard didn't take anything from the set of the 1996 movie. “No, nothing. I wasn't really the era of collectibles like it is now. I feel like people always want to know what you've taken and you're not supposed to take, and I'm a pretty adamant rule follower, so I didn't take anything,” he shares.

Lillard played Stu Macher in the original Scream movie, one of the two Ghostface killers in the movie, alongside Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis.
A few years later, he played Shaggy in the Scooy Doo movies. He tells PEOPLE that while filming those mystery movies, he got a frame picture of the Luna Ghost and a small replica of the skull from Spooky Island, which he shares are “both gifts from the production.”

Lillard was just coming off Hackers and Mad Love when he starred in the original Scream movie alongside Drew Barrymore, who he shared the screen with in latter, as well as Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Ulrich, to name a few.

It’s been 30 years since Lillard filmed Scream, and he will be rejoining the franchise in the latest movie Scream 7. In addition to the latest installment, in recent years, Lillard has starred in the Five Nights At Freddy’s franchise, joined the cast of Mike Flanagan’s Carrie, landed a role in Daredevil: Born Again and signed on to Behemoth! with Pedro Pascal.
“I have had this moment that I'm in the middle of right now, which is this sort of renaissance for my career, and it's been really lovely," he says. "It's just a moment to stop and reflect through thick or through thin, through good days and bad, how lucky I've been and how blessed I am in this career. The idea that I'm still an artist, I'm still an actor.”
While he doesn’t have one of the masks, Lillard recently paid tribute his slasher legacy through Find Familiar Spirits, the liquor company he co-founded, with the release a Ghost Face Vodka in collaboration with the owners of Ghost Face, Fun World.
The whole experience, he says is “humbling.”
“It is really amazing. We're a small team, and we took a long time to license from Fun World who've been incredible and fantastic partners” Lillard shares. “It’s building things that you're passionate about, that you love, and sharing passion for people that love the same thing really makes the work light and joyful.”
