Marcus Mumford Recalls Moment It Was 'Game Over' with Wife Carey Mulligan After They Reconnected Post-Childhood Friendship

Marcus Mumford recalls the moment it was "game over" with now-wife Carey Mulligan

The two first meet at a youth camp as children, and reconnected as adults

It didn’t take long for Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan to find their groove when they reconnected as adults years after being childhood pen pals.

Mumford, 39, opened up about his bond with his now-wife Mulligan, 40, on a new episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, revealing just how quickly things fell into place when she came to visit him in Nashville as he and his band Mumford & Sons worked on their second album.

“A friend of mine… had gone to New York, seen her, called me, and was like, ‘We’re gonna come to Nashville and see you play this basement show,’” he recalled on the March 2 episode of the podcast. “They arrive. At the airport… I was stood outside Starbucks and I could see them come out. And she runs down and jumps into my arms like, ‘Game over.’”

Mumford and Mulligan — who married in 2012 — first met as kids at bible camp, and would fax each other “pictures and doodles” around age 11. They kept in touch for a few years, but eventually lost contact. The Grammy-winning singer said Mulligan re-entered his life around the time of her 2009 film An Education.

“I saw her on a billboard for An Education, and went and saw it,” he said. “My wife’s one of the most beautiful women of all time… When we reconnected it was like, ‘Oh, I know you. You’re exactly who I know.’ And it was cool. I think [we got married quickly] because of that.”

Mumford and the Oscar-nominated actress were engaged just five months after they started dating. They’re parents to daughter Evelyn Grace, 10, and another daughter born in 2023, plus son Wilfred, 8.

Mumford and his band released their sixth album Prizefighter on Feb. 20. In his chat on Armchair Expert, the star explained that Mulligan entered his life just as both of their careers were taking off, and she helped him stay centered.

“She was a couple years ahead [in her career] and was so helpful to me in that moment being like, ‘Look, you can be in control of this and you can say yes to this, you can also say no,’” he recalled. “And I was not in a phase of my life when I was saying no to anything. So she was so helpful.”

Mulligan, meanwhile, recalled on the SmartLess podcast in 2023 that she wrote in her childhood diary that a young Mumford was “the nicest, the kindest person I’d ever met.”
