A wild possum just gave airline passengers a furry pre-flight surprise in Australia!

The cute marsupial was discovered sitting among a row of stuffed animals at an airport gift shop on Wednesday, March 18, prompting customers to look twice while doing their shopping at Hobart Airport in Tasmania.

The adorable, shy possum was filmed crouching comfortably on one of the shelves in the store, and blended in perfectly with its stuffed counterparts, as a passerby filmed the spectacle.

Liam Bloomfield, multi-site manager at the Lagardere AWPL duty-free store, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that staff first discovered the possum at 11.45 a.m. local time.

“It looked like he was pretty comfortable with his friends there,” he continued to the outlet.

Bloomfield added that the furry interloper appeared calm and that tourists got excited as the possum left the shop and walked around the terminal.

"We had passengers here, there and everywhere, taking videos,” he said.

"It was a bit of a mad rush to make sure it was safe and no passengers were disrupted and that the possum got back home."

The possum was eventually escorted out of the airport by management. Bloomfield added that just how the possum broke into the airport was a “true mystery."

A spokesperson for Hobart Airport told Pulse Tasmania: “He actually ended up on one of the souvenir shelves amongst a few plush lookalikes, so with his little family of plush possums."

“We’re obviously doing a lot of work at the moment to upgrade the terminal, so he probably made his way through from one of the worksites," the spokesperson added.

The possum’s surprise visit thankfully did not cause any disruptions for travellers.

This is not the first time that Hobart Airport has had encounters with wildlife, with the outlet reporting staff have previously rescued snakes and a baby echidna from the runway.
