Actor Johnny Depp is in talks to return for the sixth film in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed.

The series, which features Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, has so far seen five feature films. The last was Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017.

“We’re talking to Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” Bruckheimer told US outlet Deadline at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

During his 2022 defamation trial against his former wife and The Rum Diary co-star Amber Heard, he claimed he would not return to the franchise.

He also told the court: “They didn’t remove my character from the rides. They didn’t stop selling merchandise of Captain Jack Sparrow. They didn’t stop selling dolls of Captain Jack Sparrow.

“They didn’t stop selling anything. They just didn’t want there to be something trailing behind me that they’d find.”

It comes after English actor Orlando Bloom, who plays Will Turner in the Disney franchise, told ITV’s This Morning last year that he was keen to get the cast back together for a new film.

Asked if more Pirates Of The Caribbean films were possible, the 49-year-old said: “Well, I don’t know, I can’t say anything at the moment because I really don’t know, but there’s definitely availability.

“I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like. I personally think it’d be great to get the band back together; that would be great, but there are always different ideas, and so we’ll see where it lands.”

Last month, Depp appeared at San Diego Comic-Con dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, the character he will play in the upcoming Ebenezer film, which is due to be released in November this year.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean series has seen five feature films: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003); Dead Man’s Chest (2006); At World’s End (2007); On Stranger Tides (2011); and Dead Men Tell No Tales.

A short film, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Tales Of The Code: Wedlocked (2011), has also been released.

The series is based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name, and follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. It has also spawned several video games.
