A clip of Javier Bardem shutting down a misogynistic question about his wife, Penélope Cruz, has resurfaced online to widespread praise.

Despite being together for almost 20 years, the two stars keep their relationship incredibly private, and rarely speak about one another. What we do know is that they share two children; a 15-year-old son, and a 13-year-old daughter.

Variety / Getty ImagesIn 2018, they worked together once again on the Spanish-language movie Everybody Knows (Todos lo saben), directed by Asghar Farhadi. And it is a moment from the Cannes Film Festival press conference for this film that has now gained fresh attention online.

NurPhoto / Getty ImagesIn the short clip, a reporter from Chile asks Javier: “How do you feel being the only man in the world who enjoys working with his wife?” To which Javier immediately replied: “This question is of extremely bad taste.”

Javier followed his verbal rebuke with a long, stern look at the reporter as the other journalists in the room applauded. The one who asked the question can then be heard sheepishly say: “OK, gracias.”

Festival de Cannes / Viayoutube.comThe moment was recently reposted to a popular Reddit forum where it has racked up thousands of upvotes from impressed viewers, as well as hundreds of comments praising Javier for refusing to lean into misogynistic “I hate my wife” tropes.

One comment reads: “The question wasn’t really sexist towards his own wife, it was towards everyone else’s wife. lol He could’ve taken it as a compliment actually, but he decided to acknowledge the poor taste of ‘hating your wife’ joke.” Somebody else added: “The question relied on a very lazy sexist trope for cheap laughs. Javier wasn’t having any of it. I’m not. And you shouldn’t either.”

Jean Catuffe / Getty ImagesAnother joked: “‘Hey Javier, doesn't it suck to not only be married to one of the most beautiful women on planet, but also being around her all the time???’” And somebody else noted: “Idk if he said anything afterwards but the fact he immediately said the question was, essentially, shit is how these kind of questions should be handled. No dodging it or trying to laugh through it and answer in a non-misogynistic way. Just straight up ‘this question is horrible’ and refuse to answer it.”

Stephanie Augello / Getty ImagesOne more echoed: “THIS is how you shut down inappropriate journalism. A clear boundary. No put downs but no tolerance.”
