Jack Coleman, Hayden Panettiereās onscreen dad from Heroes, is paying tribute to her after her sudden death at 36 on Aug. 16.
Coleman, 68, shared the tribute in an Instagram post on Wednesday, July 19. The pair co-starred as father and daughter Noah and Claire Bennet in the hit NBC show from 2006 to 2010, which saw a cast of ordinary characters suddenly gain superhero powers and abilities. The actor shared a series of stills from his time on Heroes alongside the late Panettiere, and a few behind-the-scenes snaps.
āIām heartbroken,ā Coleman began the caption. āI couldnāt begin to put my thoughts into words until now, and they will be inadequate.ā
Coleman recounted the day he met Panettiere to shoot the pilot episode of Heroes 20 years ago, when she āintroduced herself by shouting ādaddyā and throwing her arms around me.ā
āFrom that day on, she called me daddio,ā Coleman recalled of their nicknames for one another. āShe was Haydini, because she was a magician.āHe remembered the late Ice Princess star as a āprodigious talent.ā
āDuring an early scene, a tear rolled down her cheek on the same line, take after take,ā Coleman recounted. āI marveled at her technique. āItās not technique,ā she corrected me. āIām not a trained seal. I feel it and the tears just happen to come at that moment.ā She was 16.ā
Coleman went on to detail her meteoric riseāwithin a year of the premiere of Heroes, he said she rose to the No. 1 spot on IMDb Proās STARmeter ranking system. Amid the increased visibility, Coleman recalled his young costar facing mounting scrutiny.
āShe was routinely asked obnoxious questions, mostly some version of āwhen are you going to go off the rails?āā he wrote. āToday, weād recognize those questions for the misogynistic provocations they were.ā
Coleman then recalled numerous instances in which he observed Panettiere being āhuntedā by paparazzi.

āEverywhere she went, there were photographers with 300 millimeter lensesāthe kind that can make even the most innocent activity look sinister,ā the actor wrote, adding that paparazzi would occasionally hide in the bushes behind her home or drive onto neighborsā lawns.
āThey were predatory,ā Coleman wrote. āNo one, especially a teenager, should be targeted that way.ā

āShe was vulnerable,ā he added. āShe felt everything. It made her a remarkable actor and susceptible to the heartache and thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.āāI love you, Hayden,ā Coleman continued. āIāll miss you. Iām so sorry you suffered. Iāll remember how happy you were on set and on the European press tour; how you championed Tess when she was being bullied; your commitment to animal welfare and the courage to put yourself in harmās way to protect them. I only wish you had been given that same protection.āāGood night, sweet girl,ā Coleman concluded the post. āAnd flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.ā
