Jack Coleman shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute to Hayden Panettiere, recalling their close bond on and off set

Coleman, who starred as Panettiere’s on-screen dad in Heroes, praised her talent and resilience while reflecting on the intense public scrutiny she faced as a young star

Panettiere died at 36 on Aug. 16 after suffering an apparent overdose in an apartment in Greenville, S.C.

Jack Coleman, Hayden Panettiereā€˜s onscreen dad from Heroes, is paying tribute to her after her sudden death at 36 on Aug. 16.

Coleman, 68, shared the tribute in an Instagram post on Wednesday, July 19. The pair co-starred as father and daughter Noah and Claire Bennet in the hit NBC show from 2006 to 2010, which saw a cast of ordinary characters suddenly gain superhero powers and abilities. The actor shared a series of stills from his time on Heroes alongside the late Panettiere, and a few behind-the-scenes snaps.

ā€œI’m heartbroken,ā€ Coleman began the caption. ā€œI couldn’t begin to put my thoughts into words until now, and they will be inadequate.ā€

Coleman recounted the day he met Panettiere to shoot the pilot episode of Heroes 20 years ago, when she ā€œintroduced herself by shouting ā€˜daddy’ and throwing her arms around me.ā€

ā€œFrom that day on, she called me daddio,ā€ Coleman recalled of their nicknames for one another. ā€œShe was Haydini, because she was a magician.ā€He remembered the late Ice Princess star as a ā€œprodigious talent.ā€

ā€œDuring an early scene, a tear rolled down her cheek on the same line, take after take,ā€ Coleman recounted. ā€œI marveled at her technique. ā€˜It’s not technique,’ she corrected me. ā€˜I’m not a trained seal. I feel it and the tears just happen to come at that moment.’ She was 16.ā€

Coleman went on to detail her meteoric rise—within a year of the premiere of Heroes, he said she rose to the No. 1 spot on IMDb Pro’s STARmeter ranking system. Amid the increased visibility, Coleman recalled his young costar facing mounting scrutiny.

ā€œShe was routinely asked obnoxious questions, mostly some version of ā€˜when are you going to go off the rails?ā€™ā€ he wrote. ā€œToday, we’d recognize those questions for the misogynistic provocations they were.ā€

Coleman then recalled numerous instances in which he observed Panettiere being ā€œhuntedā€ by paparazzi.

ā€œEverywhere she went, there were photographers with 300 millimeter lenses—the kind that can make even the most innocent activity look sinister,ā€ the actor wrote, adding that paparazzi would occasionally hide in the bushes behind her home or drive onto neighbors’ lawns.

ā€œThey were predatory,ā€ Coleman wrote. ā€œNo one, especially a teenager, should be targeted that way.ā€

He remembered Panettiere bringing ā€œjoyā€ and her ā€œphotographic memoryā€ to the set of Heroes, remembering her as ā€œa tiny colossus who loved to laugh.ā€ā€œWe laughed a lot,ā€ Coleman wrote, recalling her ā€œshining faceā€ and ā€œmegawatt smile.ā€

ā€œToday I’m filled with sorrow and regret,ā€ he continued. ā€œAnd anger. But that’s for another time. Right now I want to remember an extraordinary young woman who was blessed and cursed.ā€

ā€œShe was vulnerable,ā€ he added. ā€œShe felt everything. It made her a remarkable actor and susceptible to the heartache and thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.ā€ā€œI love you, Hayden,ā€ Coleman continued. ā€œI’ll miss you. I’m so sorry you suffered. I’ll remember how happy you were on set and on the European press tour; how you championed Tess when she was being bullied; your commitment to animal welfare and the courage to put yourself in harm’s way to protect them. I only wish you had been given that same protection.ā€ā€œGood night, sweet girl,ā€ Coleman concluded the post. ā€œAnd flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.ā€

On Aug. 16, Panettiere died after suffering an apparent overdose in an apartment in Greenville, S.C., the Greenville Police Department previously confirmed to PEOPLE.
