At just 10 years old, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were already dreaming of the future.
In an interview published with Consequence on Tuesday, Dec. 23, Dirnt opened up about an early conversation he had with Armstrong that may have set the tone for their future.
“We were 10 years old, first time I met [Billie],” Dirnt, now 53, told the outlet.
"Within a few minutes, one of the first conversations we ever had was about songwriting. We were just pointed into something that we thought was cool, ’cause at the time we were each struggling to mitigate our own home lives and things like that."
Dirnt went on to explain that they became "fast friends" and quickly started planning how to book gigs.
"That was the biggest struggle was just how to get a gig that wasn’t us playing at like our friend’s older brother’s keg party," he said.
In 1990, drummer Tré Cool joined the band and solidified a lineup that’s remained ever since. The "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" rockers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
Earlier this year, the band also earned their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — and they told PEOPLE it was "like a fever dream."
“I never expected in a million years that we’d ever have a star like that. It’s still sinking in," Armstrong said.
"After the ceremony, I went and took a two-hour nap. I was so overwhelmed," added Dirnt. "It was very emotional to some degree, and it’s great for the fans. They can all come here and see something that validates their love for Green Day.”

At the ceremony, the musical trio was joined by emcee Matt Pinfield and music producer Rob Cavallo, as well as Ryan Reynolds — who gave a speech — and Flavor Flav.
Elsewhere in the interview with Consequence, Dirnt opened up about what's in store for Green Day in 2026.
"We got a movie coming out called New Year's Rev, and it’s really good. It’s got a lot of heart. It’s triumphant, it’s hilarious, and it’s got some really heartfelt moments in there, too," he said.
Dirnt added, "It basically follows the story of a band and their adventures trying to get across the country to open for us. And they mimic adventures that actually happened to us, and things that actually happened to us when we were touring in vans back in the day."
