Fran Drescher says she's unlikely to return to sitcoms

In a new interview, she spoke about how filming on a soundstage requires so much time that actors often lose "the whole day"

Drescher shot to fame starring as Fran in The Nanny

Fran Drescher may have shot to stardom inThe Nanny, but she isn't eager to return to the world of sitcom television.

In a recent episode of Ted Danson's Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, 68-year-old Drescher said, "I don’t see myself doing another sitcom,” adding that recording projects on a soundstage can be incredibly time-consuming.

“You know, it’s just the idea of going into the soundstage every day,” she said of filming a sitcom. “The last one that I did wasn’t my show. I played the mom in it, and I really didn’t — I loved the people, but I didn’t enjoy the experience that much because we were shooting it over the winter months.”

She continued: "It was pretty dark when I entered the stage, and it was dark when I left it. And I thought, 'I just lost the whole day. Was this worth it? Is this how I would have wanted to spend the day if it turned out to be the last day of my life?' And it wasn't."

"Now, maybe when I'm writing and executive producing, directing — all of those hats that I wore in my own shows — maybe it would be more stimulating and gratifying," Drescher added.

The Nanny was created by Drescher and her ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, and ran from 1993 to 1999. But more recently, Drescher appeared in the 2020 series Indebted, which lasted one season and in which she played the main character's mother Debbie Klein.

In The Nanny, Drescher played a nanny to the children of a wealthy widower. The CBS sitcom ran for six seasons from 1993 to 1999.

Over a decade after Jacobson and Drescher divorced, the friendly exes co-created the TV Land sitcom Happily Divorced about a woman whose husband comes out as gay after 18 years of marriage. The show mimics their real-life story, with Jacobsen coming out to Drescher two years after the two divorced.
