Actress Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 36 inside her apartment. Emergency responders were called to the scene, and she was treated for cardiac arrest. According to 911 records, the actress was likely suffering from an ā€œoverdose,ā€ although her official cause of death was not confirmed initially.

Following the tragic news, her father, Skip Panettiere, shared a message confirming her passing. He wrote, ā€œIt is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen.ā€

Hayden started her career at a young age. She became known for playing the brave cheerleader Claire Bennet in the hit TV show Heroes. She also starred as the talented country singer Juliette Barnes in the drama series Nashville. In addition to her television roles, Hayden gained a huge fan base by starring in major Hollywood movies, including the football drama Remember the Titans and the popular horror movie franchise Scream.

Hayden’s Health Warnings and Battle With Addiction

Five months before her death, Hayden released her memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning. In the book, she spoke very openly about her struggles with drugs and alcohol. She explained that she turned to drinking to escape her ex-boyfriend’s abuse, the pressure of her career, and the sadness of a fractured motherhood, according to Radar Online.

In her memoir, she also mentioned a shocking incident when a doctor gave her a serious warning. ā€œA doctor told me that if I didn’t stop drinking, I’d be dead within five years,ā€ she revealed, after confessing that she once had jaundice and yellow eyes.

In an effort to save her life, Hayden entered an eight-month stay in a treatment center in 2020 to get sober.

Going through withdrawal was extremely painful for both physically and mentally. She suffered from mental health episodes. Recalling that, she wrote that she heard ā€œvoices that were so terrifying I got on all fours and crawled to my bathroomā€ to lie on the cool tiles and wait for the ā€œpanic to pass.ā€

The actress’s body suffered physical symptoms as well. She wrote, ā€œAs my nervous system tried to regulate itself without the depressant effects of alcohol, it went into overdrive, and my whole body shook. I couldn’t sleep, and my head pounded like it was pressing against my skull.ā€

Two weeks after she stopped drinking and taking antidepressants, Hayden began to ā€œfeel calm.ā€

The Heroes fame penned, per The News International, ā€œTwo weeks later, I laughed. Not because of (boyfriend) Brian (Hickerson) or Wlad ([ex-fiancĆ© Wladimir Klitschko) or Mom or someone else whose approval I craved, but because of something I thought was funny. That laugh was all mine, and no one could take it from me.ā€

Hayden Had Started to Feel Happy Again

After three months in her recovery program, Hayden had started feeling true happiness again. She described the feeling of joy as ā€œa million times better than any drug.ā€

In 2021, she shifted her focus to reconnecting with her daughter, Kaya, feeling ā€œmore clear-headed than I’d ever been.ā€

However, before entering treatment, she had to make a very painful choice. At the request of her ex, Klitschko, she signed away her custody rights to Kaya. She wrote, ā€œI remember every second of that day. Every f—— second. No mother could forget a single thing about the day she signed her child away.ā€

After leaving treatment, Hayden stayed connected with Kaya, who was six years old at the time, and spoke with her on FaceTime.

She wrote in her memoir, ā€œKindergarteners aren’t known for their excellent phone communication skills, but even five minutes of that laugh and those blue eyes was enough for me.ā€
