After years of refusing to do Elf on the Shelf, a mom finally caved after her youngest daughter begged her to participate in the trend — but then she accidentally forgot about the toy in her oven.
The original poster (OP) shared her story on Reddit and explained that she never wanted to do Elf on the Shelf. She said her oldest kid's birthday is on Christmas Eve, so she never felt like she had the bandwidth to design the elaborate schemes for the elves. However, her youngest had "major elf FOMO" so OP "broke down" and bought her an Elf.
OP explained that her family had gotten a puppy in October, so she felt like she was already stretched pretty thin. She didn't pull the Elf out of the garage until her daughter began worrying that the elves weren't coming because she was bad.
OP said the Elf on the Shelf stayed in her fridge for a few days, so she said maybe the Elf was frozen and put it in the oven. Her daughter couldn't find the Elf for a couple of days, so it stayed in their oven.

Elf on the Shelf
However, a couple of nights ago she received some half-baked pizzas from Domino's. Wanting to heat them up, OP turned on the oven without thinking about what had been in their previously. She realized something was wrong when she smelled burning plastic.
OP immediately pulled the Elf out and stuck it under the faucet to cool it down. Thankfully, only the tag was singed, so OP put the toy in a cabinet on a the pitcher. Now, she says she's fed up with trying to make Elf on the Shelf work in her house.
In her comments, many commiserated with OP about how difficult coming up with Elf on the Shelf schemes can be.
"I just put the elf on the mantel each year and I say he’s watching and reporting to Santa," said one person. "My kids seem satisfied with that. I’ve never read them the book or talked about moving him or any of the other social media set ups."

Another said they'd found a way to make Elf on the Shelf a little more manageable for their family.
"So I’ll probably get buried but we quickly made our elves 'Supervisor elves,' " they said. "They don’t show up until around 2 weeks BEFORE Christmas, so it’s only a little time of moving it around. They also are often very very tired from getting ready for Christmas and oversleep."
"Now our 13 year old is in charge of them for her 9 year old brother. She sees it as a fun way to have a big secret from her little brother who 100% believes Santa & the elves are real."
A third explained that she got lucky since her daughter moves the Elf herself.
"My six-year-old moves the elf herself," said the commenter. "She’ll move it and act like she has no idea how it got there and we’ll act like it’s very mysterious and surprising. It’s her own little game. I’m delighted."
