- Aubrey Plaza said that she and Michael Cera almost got married in Las Vegas.
- The duo were on a road trip and eating "a bag of edibles."
- They ended up not going through with it because they were "too high and paranoid."
Jason Bateman was delighted to learn that his *Arrested Development* son Michael Cera almost got married to Aubrey Plaza in Las Vegas while on edibles.
Plaza was the guest on the latest episode of *SmartLess*, the podcast hosted by Bateman, fellow *Arrested *alum Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. During the conversation, Bateman brought up that he'd just read on Wikipedia that Plaza previously dated Cera, who the actress confirmed that she "booked and bagged." She then revealed a wild trip they took that was close to ending in wedding bells.
"We almost got married," she shared. "We drove across the country together, eating a bag of edibles, and we drove to Vegas with a plan to get married and then get divorced right away so we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever. We thought that would be a really good bit."

Aubrey Plaza; Michael Cera.
Plaza and Cera started dating after meeting on the set of their 2010 film *Scott Pilgrim vs. the World*. Plaza was just starting her breakout role on *Parks and Recreation*, but Cera was already a movie star, courtesy of *Superbad* and *Juno*. And it was part drugs and part Cera's fame that Plaza said led to the duo not going through with their wedding bit.
"I think it was a combination of being too high and paranoid," she admitted. "We got in line at the county office or something, and then everyone started running, and we ran. We bailed."
Cera and Plaza's relationship eventually ended after 18 months, and both went on to marry other people. Little is known about Cera's wife, Nadine, who he has two children with, while Plaza was married to her *Little Hours* director Jeff Baena. The filmmaker died by suicide in January 2025, a few months after he and Plaza had separated.

Plaza previously spoke to her *Parks and Rec* costar Amy Poehler about the "daily struggle" that life had become after the loss of Baena. “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning,” she said. “I feel grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay.”
Earlier this month, news broke that Plaza is expecting her first child with partner Christopher Abbott. "I've always wanted to see what that's all about," Plaza told the *SmartLess* crew of motherhood. "It just seems so interesting, that whole thing."
