Angourie Rice is revealing how she balances her personal and professional life

The Last Thing He Told Me Star tells PEOPLE she views her upbringing as fairly "normal," noting she feels most grounded in her hometown in Australia

Angourie Rice is sharing how she maintains privacy in her personal life as a public figure.

The Last Thing He Told Me star, 25, recently spoke with PEOPLE about her rise to fame and staying grounded amid a flourishing career. Rice recalls being just 14 years old when she landed her breakout role in The Nice Guys — in which she appeared alongside Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe and Margaret Qualley — but it didn’t feel like her life had changed much at the time.

“I did the movie, and then I came home, and I had my life at home,” the Australian native explains. “Then the movie came out, and I went to promote it in L.A. and London and at the Cannes Film Festival. Then I came home, and I was back at home and things were the same.”

“I still had to go to school,” she notes. “So it changed a lot for me in terms of my career and what jobs I was auditioning for, which was amazing, but it wasn't an overnight thing, like, 'Everything's different now.'"

Rice and her family still live in Australia, and as she has booked more and more jobs over the years (including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Mare of Easttown, Mean Girls, and her latest, The Last Thing He Told Me opposite Jennifer Garner), she says she has learned to keep certain aspects of her life separate.

When she was younger, she jokes that she often felt like Hannah Montana — Miley Cyrus’ iconic character on the Disney Channel series, where she played a typical girl who had a secret life as a pop star.

“I think it's very important to keep a bit of yourself for yourself, especially in publicity,” the Mean Girls alum shares. “I want to connect with people, and I always want to be honest, and there are things about me that wouldn't at all be bad to share with journalists or on social media, but it's just the practice of keeping something for yourself, I think is important, even if it's mundane. So there are things like that in my life that I think, oh, that's just for me, and that's fine.”

While she prioritizes taking on jobs that excite her, Rice says she also tries to make time to return home and have a break to reset when she can.

“In terms of how much time I spend away from home, I really just go where the work takes me, but I consider maintaining relationships and what things are really important to be home for,” she adds. “I love being home for Christmas, that's important to me. But it's always a bit of a dance to figure out how far you want to stretch yourself, so I think it's an ever-evolving practice.”

She credits her friends and family for “telling me the truth and keeping me honest and grounded,” Rice reveals that most of the people closest to her are not in the spotlight.

“I feel most grounded when I go home and when I talk to people from home, because a lot of my friends are very, very artistic people, but they don't necessarily work in the arts or the entertainment industry,” Rice says. “I cherish that so much, because we can share our days with each other and we understand when we complain that we're not ungrateful, and you just get perspective. I just get perspective.”
