Alia Shawkat is finally addressing the rumors that she and Brad Pitt were dating back in 2019.
The two were introduced by a mutual friend, director Spike Jonze, and bonded over art, Shawkat told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live.
“He’s great, he’s the coolest,” she said of Pitt, who began dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon in 2022.
There are worse things in life than being the subject of Brad Pitt dating rumors.
Alia Shawkat made headlines when she was spotted out with the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star on several occasions — at an art exhibition, at a Ye concert, even grabbing burgers at In-n-Out — over the course of four months, beginning in the fall of 2019.
Nearly seven years later, the coupling was still on Andy Cohen’s mind Sunday night when the actress stopped by Watch What Happens Live to promote The Wrong Girls alongside costar Kristen Stewart.
“I was obsessed with the Brad Pitt dating rumors,” Cohen told Shawkat.
“Me too,” seconded Stewart. “I was enthralled.”
“Oh God, of course you were,” replied Shawkat, as she picked up her cocktail and pretended to nervously chug it.
“How did that come to be?” Cohen asked, putting her in the hot seat.
“This is my favorite question to get asked,” Shawkat quipped. She explained that the two “became friends” after being introduced by a mutual pal, director Spike Jonze.

“It sounds all very chic and Hollywood,” she continued. “But we met, and he’s really into art and he’s very cool and we became friends. And everyone thought we were dating, because if you stand next to him everyone thinks you’re dating. Like, even his own mother.”
But it was Shawkat’s grandmother who really took the romance rumors to heart.
“[She] saved the Us Weekly I was on the cover of,” the Search Party actress recalled. “There was a really bad photo… and they were like, ‘Who’s the new girl?’ And my Arabic grandmother was like [gasps]. I was like, ‘I’ve been working in film for 30 years, you’ve never seen anything, but you love this.’”
Shawkat agreed with Cohen that being tabloid fodder alongside Pitt actually gave her “cred,” as well as an A-list pal. “He’s great, he’s the coolest,” she said of the actor, who’s been dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon since 2022.
The two friends also gossiped about the buzz surrounding their friendship, Shawkat previously told The New Yorker. “I was like, ‘You know everyone thinks we’re dating? And there’s this whole thing, and I’m being followed.’ And he was like, ‘I’m sorry. It happens. If you hang out with me, it happens.’ He had no awareness of it at all.”

But Pitt had been questioned about the rumored relationship back in November 2019, after he and Shawkat, 25 years his junior, were spotted together at the “L.A. on Fire” art exhibition.
“I don’t know how many women they’ve said I’ve been dating the last two or three years,” he told The New York Times, “and none of it’s true.”
